Two Wheelies 04 - Exercise and 'The Top Six Inches'
Our Wheelie Good Tips are taking a detour …
We’ve listened to Andrew and Paul chat over a beer many times… now it’s your turn. What sorts of things do two long term wheelies - over 80 years lived from a chair between them - talk about? There may be some gems in here for a newbie … a few nods of the head for someone who’s been rolling for a while … and quite possibly some eye rolls! 🙄😆 We love ’em - hope you do too. 💛💙

    I just got diagnosed with syringomyelia c5-t12 today after noticing pain and numbness in my left leg and arm in March. I am 21 years old. To say Im scared is an understatement. I have grad school ahead of me. I want to get married and have children. I got a phone call while driving home and was told I have this condition and that it will be "monitored." Chiari malformation runs in the family, but they havent found anything to suggest that I have it. Ive been having cadiovascular compliactions, too, along with the typical symptoms. I just hope more young people are taken seriously about their pain and can catch these things early.

    I hope you are still hanging in there Fritz. Been battling Syringomyelia for the last 27 years. I would not wish it on anyone. The syrinx was caused by a botched spinal surgery that was performed the night I suffered a traumatic spinal cord surgery which left me a T-12-L-1 injury at the age of 21. I lived a healthy and active life post spinal cord surgery. 24 years post injury I started to lose some function of my abdominal function and I was having severe burning in my mid back and abdominal area. I would not wish this on anyone. It has robbed me of an active and high profile life as an elite coach in wheelchair sports. If you're from New Zealand then you might know one of my friends from wheelchair racing, Ben Lucas. Ben was a world class racer who has become an outstanding representative of New Zealand at the international Paralympic level. Take care and never back down. Know that you are not alone. If you doubt anything I've written then google me name and you can read about the life I lived pre-syringomyelia.

    • @martymorse2
      @martymorse2 5 месяцев назад

      @@mograkhan-bt2zk Not sure about your statement. I have had my spinal cord re-plumbed six times since I hit the ground in an off road motorcycle accident in a large quarry. Fell over 70 feet and it was over two hours before someone responded to my calls for help.I was an idiot for riding alone in such a dangerous environment. Since I hit the ground I have alway owned up to my tragic mistake and the pain and suffering it brought to my life and that of my retirement aged parents. I've been a T-12-L-1 incomplete paraplegic for the last 48 years who has requited a wheelchair for mobility. To anyone out there dealing with syringomyelia, I recommend that you dig deep into the research and seek a neurosurgeon who is a specialist in Syrinx surgeries. If you are from the US then go to the University of Iowa Medical Center, Craig Institute in Colorado or at Duke Medical Center in North Carolina. At 70 years old I will no longer seek surgical options. Been there and it has worn myself and my loving family down. I'm at the point where I just want to keep the pain under an 8 on.a scale of 1-10. My diet has remained consistent and I maintain a body weight that allows me to perform most of my transfers in my activities of daily living. I am fortunate to have had an excellent Physiatrist(Physical Medicine Doctor) for the last 27 years who is attentive and he actually makes "house calls" to check up on me, my wife amd two boys. God bless you and all the best with the mental health issues related to this insidious health issue called Syringomyelia. .

      Not entirely sure what the question is but here's some details from Susan and Frank who built the device. Hi, this chair certainly changed Susan's life. With the help of a support worker I take her into the surf, support worker takes the chair out. Then I "launch" Susan with the waves so that she can body surf in, just like the old days before her accident. I was inspired to build this after Susan tried a balloon tyred beach chair. I bought a new, cheap alluminium framed wheelchair (Chineese), along with 4in x 20in wide bicycle wheels and tyres. Removed the steel bearings from wheels and replaced them with nylon/syntheic bushes I had made. Axles are stainless steel bolts. Took the castors off and replaced with 1in alluminium tube with buggy wheels from buggy used to tow kayaks across sand. Pivot the arm rests so transfers to the chair can be made. I'm not an engineer, a firefighter. I think most people with basic skills could build this, a great winter project. Get "a round tuit" and as Nike famously said, "Just do it" Frank Tauranga New Zealand (Aotearoa)

      Hey. There are different ways. If you can transfer there is an isle chair that can take you to the bathrooms on the planes. Some are a bit tight but some planes you can get in as, the bathroom walls can slide in to make the bathroom bigger. Alternatively, I know of people that put a blanket over them and use a catheter into a bottle with a lid. Or drain their leg bag into a bottle with a lid. Not a perfect world out there but there are ways around things.

      Thats not great on the airlines behalf. However , contact the powerchair manufacture and ask for information on the batteries and if they can be safely put on a plane. Keep this information on your ph or in paper form so you can give it to the airline. Always check first with them as well.

    • @kalenagy
      @kalenagy Год назад

      @@brettladbrook7120 What upset me more was the lack of alternative solutions e.g. if there was a rental for power chairs at the airport I would not have had such a rough time. E.g. I struggled to go to the bathroom or to go buy food.It was no you can't and we have nothing else for you. you either travel without it or do not go on the plane. Developed countries in the 21st era should have more knowledge and options advertised. It would not cost them anything to share info on rentals to pwds if they think our motorized chairs are a flight risk.
